The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said on Monday, that allegations of naira abuse against Senator Danjuma Goje’s daughter, Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, are untrue.
There were calls for her and those involved to face repercussions after a widely shared video of naira notes being freely sprayed during a wedding in Kano on Friday, October 24, 2024, caused many to assume it was her wedding.
According to a statement issued by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the video depicting naira abuse was not recorded during Goje’s daughter’s wedding.
According to Oyewale, the event took place at Amina Babagana Zannah’s wedding reception. She is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna, also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria, who owns Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise, which has locations in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai.
A viral video showing the naira, the country’s currency, being sprayed during a wedding ceremony in Kano, Kano State, on Friday, October 24, 2024, has drawn the attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“Allegations of naira abuse were made against Mrs Fauziya Danjuma Goje, Senator Goje’s daughter, by Nigerians from varied backgrounds, including a reputable national publication.
“As a responsible and accountable anti-corruption agency battling against currency abuse and the dollarization of the economy, the EFCC proceeded quickly to analyse the video. While naira abuse occurred, it was not at Goje’s daughter’s wedding, but at Amina Babagana Zannah’s wedding celebration, which took place on the specified date.
“Zannah is the daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna (also known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria), the CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise, with locations in Abuja, Kano, and Dubai (United Arab Emirates).”
Oyewale added that Zannah’s mother, Haruna, confirmed the video’s authenticity and acknowledged that it was recorded at her daughter’s wedding.
He further stated that the EFCC has called Mohammad, the groom, to its national headquarters in Abuja, along with others engaged in the alleged cash abuse, for additional questioning.
Oyewale continued, “Haruna confirmed the viral video and admitted that the naira abuse occurred during her daughter’s wedding reception on October 24, 2024. The bridegroom, Ibrahim Mohammad, is from Niger Republic, and those who allegedly sprayed naira and dollar bills were members of his family.
“The Commission has summoned the Nigerian groom, Mohammad, as well as all those engaged in spraying naira notes at his wedding to Zannah, to its national headquarters in Abuja.
“While the EFCC values the awareness its campaigns against naira abuse are generating across the country, it will not act against anyone wrongly accused of an offence. The Commission remains committed to this campaign and will hold any offender accountable, regardless of their status.”
