The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) dismissed 27 officers in 2024 for engaging in fraudulent activities and misconduct. The decision followed recommendations by the Staff Disciplinary Committee and was approved by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede.
In a statement released by EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the Commission reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for corruption, emphasising that all allegations against staff would be thoroughly investigated. This includes a recent $400,000 claim involving an unidentified staff member and a Sectional Head.
The EFCC also highlighted ongoing cases against impersonators attempting to extort money under the guise of its leadership. Two suspects, Ojobo Joshua and Aliyu Hashim, were arraigned for demanding $1 million from Mohammed Bello-Kaka, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, in a fake investigation.
The Commission further warned against blackmail tactics by individuals under investigation, urging the public to report such activities to authorities.
Meanwhile, the Financial Institutions Training Centre reported that 49 Nigerian bank employees were dismissed for fraud between April and June 2024, a 40% rise from the previous quarter, underscoring the need for vigilance across sectors.
