The Osi-Apagun of Egbaland and founder of Egbaliganza, Chief Lai Labode, has emphasised the need to celebrate the beauty of Egba fashion and its evolving art while preserving the deep connection between royalty and heritage.
Egbaliganza, an initiative inspired by Chief Labode — the Osi Apagun Pote of Egbaland — stands as a grand celebration of Egba tradition and identity. Fondly described as “The Walkway of Kings,” the event brings together High Chiefs, Princes, Princesses, and leaders of Egba land in a colourful showcase of unity, culture, and pride.

For over three years, Egbaliganza has been at the forefront of promoting the elegance, nobility, and distinct fashion of the Egba people. Now, in 2025, the event is stepping onto the global stage, positioning Abeokuta as a rising hub for culture, fashion, and heritage tourism.
Speaking on News Central’s TV show Jasiri on Wednesday, Labode shared insights into the inspiration behind the Lisabi Festival, while unveiling ambitious plans to further promote Egba culture, its people, and its fashion industry.
“Growing the 1 billion dollar industry is not a joke. If you see the plan, we have established a 50-year plan for Egbaland, where we have mapped every local community,” Labode revealed.
He further disclosed that preparations are being made to host the African Fashion Conference within Egbaland — a landmark event aimed at bringing together the best designers from across Africa.
“Sometime later this year, or 2026, the plan is going on. There will be the African Fashion Conference happening in Egbaland. In Lagos, but Egbaland. We are bringing the best of African designers to Nigeria, to Egbaland,” he said.
Labode stressed the need to grow Africa’s fashion market share, which he described as far below its potential.
“The African fashion market is 1.2% of the global market. And we’re talking $31 billion. That’s really abysmal. How do we take this from 1.2% to at least 15%? We started the journey. That’s why we created a blueprint for other ethnic groups. We’re sharing. We’re not restricting anything. We’re not hiding anything,” he added.
