Egypt has confirmed that it has presented a comprehensive framework proposal aimed at resolving the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The proposed plan consists of three stages culminating in a ceasefire, and Egypt is currently awaiting responses from the involved parties.
Diaa Rashwan, head of Egypt’s State Information Service, stated that further details of the plan will be disclosed once responses are received. The objective of the proposal is to bring the perspectives of all concerned parties closer, with the aim of halting Palestinian bloodshed, ending aggression in the Gaza Strip, and restoring peace and stability to the region.
Egyptian security sources had previously outlined elements of the proposal, including a multi-stage ceasefire involving prisoner releases by both Israel and Hamas. There were also mentions of the potential formation of a post-war administration in Gaza.
One key aspect of Egypt’s proposal is suggesting that Hamas and Islamic Jihad relinquish power in the Gaza Strip in exchange for a permanent ceasefire. However, this proposal has been rejected by officials from both groups, who emphasise that the future of the post-Gaza war should be determined by the Palestinians themselves.
The proposal envisions a multi-stage ceasefire, beginning with an initial temporary ceasefire lasting one or two weeks. The subsequent stages involve the release of captives on both sides, the withdrawal of tanks, and a halt to all hostile activities.
It’s worth noting that Hamas and Islamic Jihad have expressed that they will not cease fighting unless the Israeli aggression ends.
