Egypt Begins Extension of Suez Canal One Year after Ship Blockage

Egypt’s government has begun construction on expanding a two-way stretch of the Suez canal from 77km to 82 km.

Osama Arabe, Chairman of the Authority Managing the Egyptian Waterway, stated that widening the full length of the link between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean would be too costly.

Last year, global maritime trade was hampered for roughly a week after one of the world’s largest cargo ships got stuck in the 90-kilometre canal.
