President of Egypt Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has called for an extraordinary session of the Arab League at the delegate level to discuss the developments in Ukraine, as Russia continues its military operation in the country.
Following diverging stances with Syria supporting it, Lebanon condemning it, the United Arab Emirates remaining neutral. Egypt however expressed its broad concerns and hopes for a quick resolution.
The Northern African country on Thursday offered waivers for Ukrainian tourists on its soil, to extend their stay in Egypt until it is safe for them to return to their country.
Russian forces are reported to have entered Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, and street fighting is underway.
Consultations are currently underway between the General Secretariat of the Arab League, Egypt, Kuwait, the current president of the Arab League Council, and the rest of the member states to consult on the proposed date for holding this emergency meeting.
Arab countries have formed crisis teams that include representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Transportation, and Health, and airlines to evacuate members of the Arab community who have not been able to leave Ukraine.
A United Nations agency says 64 civilians have died and 174 have been injured since Russia began its operation.
