Egypt Garment Factory Fire Kills Twenty

Egyptian officials say a fire that erupted at a four-story garment factory in the industrial zone of Obour, about 35 kilometers north of Cairo has killed at least twenty people leaving twenty four others critically injured.

Firefighters arrived in 15 fire trucks to extinguish the blaze and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent factories.

Thursday’s blaze is the latest in a string of fires in Egypt, where safety standards and fire regulations are poorly enforced.

In February, fire from an unlicensed shoe warehouse in Giza engulfed a 13-storey building adjacent to a highway.

In 2020, fire broke out next to a busy Cairo highway from leaks in an oil pipeline setting vehicles ablaze and resulting in 17 persons getting severely injured.

It was the same six years ago, when dozens died in a similar fire incident at a three-storey warehouse, also in Obour, after a gas container exploded in an elevator.
