Egyptian authorities have formally requested that Interpol issue an arrest warrant for Admiral Mohamed Ibrahim Youssef, a former military leader and chairman of the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport. This follows a recent court ruling sentencing him to ten years in prison in absentia after his conviction in a corruption case.
On Sunday, the Cairo Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Magdy Abdel Bary, found Youssef guilty of orchestrating illegal deals that netted tens of millions of Egyptian pounds in profits. He was also accused of directing efforts to dismiss lawsuits against the company for breaching its contracts, leading to significant financial losses for the state.
The court sentenced Youssef to ten years in prison and issued the same sentence for Medhat Mansour Mustafa, vice chairman and managing director of the Gulf Egyptian Investment Group, alongside a fine of 30 million Egyptian pounds (around $618,000).
Egypt’s Public Funds Prosecution accused Youssef of using his position to unlawfully gain profits and extend benefits to others, exploiting his authority in handling contracts. He was also charged with intending to personally profit from these agreements.
Authorities are now seeking international cooperation through Interpol to locate and arrest Youssef, who remains at large.
