Egypt’s National Election Authority has officially announced the dates for the upcoming presidential election, scheduled to take place from December 10 to 12, 2023, with the winner to be declared on December 18.

Chairman of Egypt’s National Election Authority, Walid Hassan Hamza, confirmed that the final results of the presidential elections will be officially announced and published in the national newspaper no later than January 16, 2024, ensuring the completion of the entire election process before January 17, 2024.

While President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has yet to formally declare his candidacy, it is widely anticipated that he will seek and secure reelection.

Economic Challenges Loom Sisi’s decision to hold the election sooner than expected aligns with predictions made by experts, who foresaw the need to address economic challenges ahead of a proposed shift to a flexible exchange rate that could potentially escalate tensions.

The upcoming presidential election occurs against the backdrop of a severe economic crisis in Egypt, characterized by soaring inflation over recent months and a significant depreciation of the national currency, which has lost half its value since March 2022. The government had previously maintained a fixed exchange rate earlier in the year.

A Decade in Power Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, aged 68, assumed the presidency in 2014 following his first election victory. He secured a second term in 2018, running against one of his political allies. In 2019, he further solidified his authority through constitutional amendments that permit him to run for a third term. These changes also extended the presidential term from four to six years, potentially allowing Sisi to remain in office until 2030, should he win the upcoming election.
