Egyptian National Railways to Install Electronic System on Main lines

Egypt’s Ministry of Transport along with three global companies are working to develop the new system by June 2022. They seek to boost the nation’s railway system through the installation of a high-level electrical system on its three main lines. The Upper Egypt line with more than 850 kilometres is Egypt’s largest line.

Transport Minister Kamel el-Wazir said the new system will eradicate issues facing drivers and the railway station towers.

He further explained that a similar project to develop the signal system at railway stations in the country is underway, and will cost EGP 1 billion.

The Egyptian Railway Authority further announced the completion of the rehabilitation and overhaul of 20 tractors as part of 81 tractors. The authority has acquired 110 new tractors on six batches from the US.

The repaired tractors replaced the old ones, and were installed on the system. The ministry entered an EGP 9.42 Billion deal with the American firm General Electric to procure 110 train engines.

In addition to providing technical assistance, the contract includes the rehabilitation of 81 current fleet at Tebin Workshop in Cairo, and the supply of spare parts for 15 years.
