Hani Raslan, one of Egypt’s best known political researchers and experts on African affairs, died on Saturday after complications from COVID-19.
Raslan was the top expert on African affairs for the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies (ACPSS).
Raslan was born in Khartoum and was a founding member and former head of Sudan and Nile Basin Unit of the ACPSS. Additionally, he served as editor-in-chief of the centre’s “Egyptian Vision” magazine.
Naslan was admitted to the hospital last week with Coronavirus. His condition deteriorated as he already had kidney problems, according to colleagues and family members on Facebook.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population reported 919 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, along with 57 deaths and 781 recoveries.
There have been 360,435 reported cases in Egypt, with 20,594 deaths and 298,865 recoveries.
The country’s fourth wave of the virus is in full force, with daily case figures ten times higher than what was recorded at the end of July.
The Health Ministry states that official figures are likely to only represent 10 per cent of actual cases.
