Egypt's Record-Breaking Scorer Hossam Hassan Named Technical Director

Egypt has appointed Hossam Hassan, the nation’s highest goal scorer of all time, as the technical director of their national team.

Following the elimination of the Pharaohs in the Round of 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the North Africans parted ways with coach Rui Vitoria last Sunday.

Egypt, boasting a record seven-time continental champion title, suffered a penalty shootout defeat against DR Congo after a 1-1 draw.

Hossam Hassan, aged 57, clinched three Nations Cup titles and netted 67 goals across 173 FIFA-recognised matches during his illustrious 22-year international career.

His twin brother, Ibrahim, who also amassed over 100 caps for the national team, has been appointed as the team’s manager.

In a statement posted by the Egyptian Football Association on an external platform, it was confirmed that the board of directors made the decision regarding the appointments during a meeting held on Tuesday.

Hossam Hassan has previously managed several Egyptian clubs, including two stints with Cairo giants Zamalek, since embarking on his coaching journey in 2008.

He briefly served as the head coach of the Jordanian national team during the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, which notably included their encounter against Uruguay in an intercontinental play-off.

His inaugural competitive fixtures with Egypt will be in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau, scheduled for June.

Under Vitoria’s tenure, the Pharaohs secured maximum points from their first two qualifiers in November.
