Eight Kenya police officers were arrested on Thursday for allegedly engaging in various crimes, including robbery, extortion, and bribery.
Police records indicate that one officer, stationed at Parliament Police Station, allegedly demanded a bribe of Sh40,000 from a man.
Also, one officer from Kayole Police Station was implicated in the arrest of university student Ian Njoroge, 19, who had been charged with assaulting a traffic policeman.
Four of the arrested officers are under investigation for stealing Sh2.2 million from Rophine International School in Utawala.
These officers include three from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at Kasarani Police Station and one from Ruai Police Station.
The group, along with two civilians, was found in possession of Sh473,000, believed to be part of the stolen money.
A school accountant reported that he withdrew the funds intended for casual workers’ pay, but the money was stolen from his vehicle outside the school.
DCI detectives, aided by security cameras, traced the suspects to a parking yard in Utawala, where they discovered the vehicle used in the robbery with six occupants, including the four officers and two suspects.
The officers, who were not authorised to operate in Utawala, were immediately arrested.
In another incident, an officer from Parliament Police Station was detained by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly extorting Sh40,000 from a man with an outstanding issue at the station.
The complainant had reached out to the EACC after feeling harassed. The police officer reportedly threatened to bring the man to court on false charges unless the bribe was paid. The officer, who is out on bond, was booked at Kilimani Police Station.
Two other officers from Capitol Hill station were arrested by the EACC for demanding bribes. They had detained a motorcyclist for operating without a licence and sought a bribe, which the motorcyclist reported to the EACC.
Additionally, a police officer was implicated in a robbery on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. A lorry carrying 522 bags of rice was attacked by a gang of five, who tied up the driver and threw him out of the vehicle.
The driver later reported the assault at Machinery Police Post. The lorry was found abandoned in Manyanga with only 418 bags of rice remaining.
