At least eight Burkina Faso soldiers were killed by Militants and five others injured in an attack in the north of the country security sources said on Monday.

One of the security sources confirmed that the attack on the military detachment took place in the centre-north Sanmatenga province early on Monday, and the death toll could climb.

The Burkina Faso government was not immediately available to comment. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Insecurity has been brewing in Burkina Faso for the time being with much attention focused on Burkina’s north and, more recently, east.

The crisis in Burkina Faso has strong local dynamics ranging from ethnic tensions, a weak central state, political instability, historical grievances, social injustices, uncontrollable self-defence militias in rural areas, as well as a network of opportunistic racketeers and bandits profiting from the lawlessness.
