Niger Delta Elders under the Umbrella of the Rivers State Elders Council have called for caution as the Political tension escalates.
At the end of an emergency meeting, they urged all parties to the ongoing crisis to exercise restraint.
The Forum regretted that neither Governor Siminialayi Fubara nor Nyesom Wike responded to letters seeking for audience with each of them.
They voiced concerns over what they described as an attempt to create an unnecessary crisis in the state through the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara by loyalists of former Governor, Nyesom Wike.
They urged the Governor to hasten action on rebuilding the demolished State House of Assembly complex. The elders also condemned the moves from Court to Court looking for rulings by all sides to the crisis. They also rejected lawlessness of any form within the State.
The Council is headed by Former Rivers State Governor, Rufus Ada George. The elders called on Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu to intervene immediately, while condemning the defection of members of the House of Assembly from the PDP to the APC without recourse to their constituents who elected them.
The mediators condemned the misuse of political power by politicians for personal interest. They urged Security agents and the Judiciary to avoid being used to ignite lawlessness, violence, and illegality.
