Electricity rationing would continue in South Africa into Thursday in line with the recent scheduled blackouts according to state utility firm Eskom. Eskom explains that the breakdowns have been a heavy burden on the system leading to the recent load shedding.
Load shedding happens when there is not enough electricity available coupled with extreme cold weather such as South Africa is experiencing, at the moment. This prevents it from meeting the demand of all customers. Thus, the supply of electricity from the public utility provider to some customers are interrupted to make way for supply to others customers
South Africa started observing load shedding in December 2014 due to diesel shortages but had lingered due to several factors. Most of which hovers around its huge debt and poor infrastucture upgrades.
This round of load shedding has entered stage two and will be implemented from 0700 GMT to 2000 GMT on Thursday, Eskom said in a statement posted on Twitter. It adds that constraints on the power system were likely to persist for the rest of the week.
