Electricity: Nigerian Discos Lost N28.97bn to Unpaid Bills in July – NERC

Nigeria's Q1 2024 Electricity Generation Drops by 901 GWh— NERC

Nigeria’s eleven Electricity Distribution Companies (Discos) lost ₦28.97 billion in July 2024 due to unpaid electricity bills from customers.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) revealed this on Thursday in its Commercial Performance Factsheet for July 2024. The figure accounts for 17.74% of the total electricity bills issued during the period.

Despite this, the Discos achieved an electricity bill collection efficiency of 82.26%, collecting ₦162.12 billion out of the ₦197.11 billion billed in July 2024.

According to NERC’s data, Ikeja, Eko, and Abuja Discos recorded the highest collections, with ₦33.98 billion, ₦28.35 billion, and ₦25.16 billion, respectively.

In contrast, Aba Disco had the lowest collection, with just ₦1.34 billion in July 2024.

This financial report comes at a time when Nigerians continue to face inadequate power supply, with an average of only 5,000 megawatts for a population exceeding 250 million.
