Elon Musk has once again called on a US court to prevent OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, from transitioning into a for-profit enterprise. According to a CNBC report, Musk’s legal team, representing both him and his AI venture xAI, filed the injunction on Friday.
The filing also seeks to bar OpenAI from allegedly restricting its investors from funding competing firms, a move Musk argues hampers competition in the rapidly expanding AI sector.
OpenAI, initially established as a non-profit organization in 2015, has shifted to a “capped” for-profit model and is now exploring becoming a for-profit public benefit corporation. Musk, a co-founder who exited the company in 2018, has repeatedly voiced concerns about its profit-driven trajectory under CEO Sam Altman.
In March, Musk sued OpenAI, claiming the organization had strayed from its founding mission of making AI research openly available to the public. OpenAI, meanwhile, has dismissed Musk’s claims as sour grapes over his departure and criticized his push for open-source AI development.
With billions of dollars at stake in the AI sector, Musk’s latest legal challenge underscores the high-stakes battle for dominance in the rapidly evolving field.
