Kenya's Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua (News Central TV)

Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua said the government will hold owners of the gas station where the Embakasi blast killed three people and injured over 200 accountable for the “unacceptable occurrence” in the country’s capital Nairobi on Thursday night.

DP Rigathi Gachagua who visited the scene of the tragic incident on Friday, condoled with affected families while giving them assurance of the government’s support.

He stressed that the William Ruto-led government will ensure that those responsible for the destructive blast are adequately dealt with.

“The tragic and unfortunate incident of the Liquified Petroleum Gas explosion last night at Mradi Embakasi, Nairobi, has caused deep agony and great pain to many families.

“This afternoon, I visited the site of the terrible incident in which we lost lives and property.

“I have also visited those survivors at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital.

“The Government, led by President @WilliamsRuto condoles with families, friends and relatives of those who have lost their kin and wish quick recovery to those recuperating at the hospitals.

“We will support the affected families as they come to terms with the tragedy and rise to rebuild their lives.

“As we call for caution and adherence to the rule of law, those culpable in this unacceptable occurence will be held accountable,” Gachagua wrote on X.

News Central earlier reported that Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) released a press statement on Friday, stating that the agency rejected all applications for the construction of a liquefied petroleum gas storage and filling plant in the area of the blast.

All applications were rejected as they did not meet the set criteria for an LPG storage and filling plant in that area.

“The main reason for the rejection was the failure of the designs to meet the safety distances stipulated,” as well as “the high population density around the proposed site,” EPRA said in a statement.
