Saulos Chilima, the vice president of Malawi accused of corruption, took part in a charity golf game today at the Lilongwe Golf Club.
At the event hosted by the Rotary Club of Lilongwe to collect money for a free dentistry camp at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), Chilima struck the first ceremonial tee shot.
Chilima said on his Facebook page that he attended church in the morning and then proceeded to the golf club.
Thomas Chafunya, the captain of the Lilongwe Golf Club, was quoted by Malawi News Agency as saying that the competition is significant since it aims to collect money for those who require dental care at KCH.
“The funds raised will carter for some costs for a free week dental service at KCH. Our efforts today, together with those who have sponsored the teams playing today, will see about 1500-2000 people getting free dental services at KCH,” Chafunya said.
The golf format for the day was a 4 better ball, meaning a team of four golfers was divided into two, and the two were partnered with additional two players.
The Anti-Corruption Bureau is anticipated to question or detain Chilima because he is suspected of accepting money from businessman Zuneth Sattar.
Last week, Malawi‘s President Lazarus Chakwera stripped the Vice-President of all his delegated powers after his number two man was allegedly involved in a $150 million corruption scandal.
The president stated that 53 current and former officials were identified in a study by the nation’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) as having received money from British-Malawian businessman Zuneth Sattar between 2017 and 2021.
This relates to 16 contracts that Sattar’s five companies received from the Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Defence Force.
The vice president and the police chief, who was fired, are among the authorities mentioned in the study.
