The 97th Academy Awards nominations were revealed on Thursday, and “Emilia Pérez,” “The Brutalist,” and “Wicked” had a strong morning.
After Academy leadership acknowledged the impact of continuing wildfires in Los Angeles, Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott announced the film industry’s top prize candidates, giving a sneak peek at the race that will take place over the next several weeks and culminate at the ceremony in March.
“The Brutalist” and “Wicked” each received ten nominations, while “Emilia Pérez” received thirteen.
The musical “Emilia Pérez” has been a success despite some controversy. Numerous concerns, including Selena Gomez’s purported difficulties with her character’s Spanish vocabulary and other problems with the film’s portrayal of the transgender community, were lessened by the film’s four Golden Globes. Despite this, it was the best non-English language picture ever, surpassing both Roma and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones play Hungarian refugees who arrive in the US following World War II in Brady Corbet’s film “The Brutalist.” The employment of artificial intelligence in dialect in the Golden Globe-winning movie recently caused controversy, and Corbet defended his actors aggressively during the discussion.
In contrast, “Wicked” undoubtedly had a huge audience vote, which this time also resulted in award recognition.
The Jon M. Chu-directed musical received individual awards for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the latter of whom was nominated for the first time, and a nomination for best picture. Erivo has already received a nomination for “Harriet.” (She will become an EGOT, joining the select few who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award.) If she adds an Oscar to her collection of honours, she will become an EGOT.
According to the Academy, “Wicked” and “Emilia Pérez” are the first two musicals nominated in the Best Film category since 1968, when “Oliver!” and “Funny Girl” both received nominations.
With 13 people receiving their first Oscar nominations, including Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Isabella Rossellini, and Zoe Saldaña, the acting categories were primarily dominated by first-time nominees.
The ceremony will be hosted by Conan O’Brien and broadcast on ABC on March 2.
