Since the Federal high court nullified the reinstatement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the emir of Kano, police have been deployed to both Palaces to maintain peace and order in the state.
Speaking during an interview with News Central on the controversial tussle in Kano, Kano State Chief Press Secretary, Sanusi Bature said, “First of all, the issue of Emiral council in Kano was meant to write the wrong of the previous administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje because traditionally institutions are not meant to be politicised.
“His Excellency, during the campaign, decided that he is going to review the lost glory of the state on so many aspects including traditional institutions.”
He stated that Emir Sanusi Lamido remains in the palace and is discharging the service as the Emir of Kano despite the conflicting orders from the state and high court.
Sanusi Bature added that the review of the law and the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi was to maintain the emirate’s status as an independent institution and remove the politicisation of it that’s why the government reverted to the pre-2019 emirate law to ensure Emir Sanusi remains the 16th emir of Kano State.
He mentioned that chieftaincy affairs are to be treated by the state High Court.
Weighing in on the matter, the spokesperson of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Ladipo Johnson said, “Chieftaincy is not a right, it’s a privilege and the state’s High Court has no jurisdiction whatsoever”.
When asked about what is being done to communicate effectively to the people of Kano that the issue is being settled and to secure the security of lives and properties, Bature said because Kano is a politically sensitive state, Sanusi said the Kano state governor has dedicated himself to ensuring peace in the state.
