The Enugu State Government has confirmed that the concession process for Akanu Ibiam International Airport has passed the 70 percent completion mark, with full finalisation expected by the second quarter of 2025. This development was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Obi Ozor, during an appearance on Enugu Kwenu, a programme broadcast on Afia TV.
Dr Ozor explained that the process is being driven by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Aviation, in partnership with private sector investors. Once the concession is completed, the designated operators will initiate a series of upgrades to the airport’s international facilities.
These enhancements include the completion of the international terminal, cargo terminal, and the development of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities. The project also covers the construction of aircraft hangars and the extension of the existing runway.
“The Federal Government has been supportive to the state. There are private investors that are working tirelessly with the Federal Ministry of Aviation to conclude the concessioning of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, and of course, the immediate rehabilitation and operationalization of that airport.
“And we know that they have gone more than 70% of the way in terms of the process, and we are hoping that the remaining 30% should hopefully be completed in the second quarter of 2025. And that should allow them to be able to move in and get that international wing of the airport completed—including the cargo terminal, the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and other ancillary works that need to be done at the airport, such as extension of the runway and hangar,” Ozor stated.
In addition to the airport concession, the Commissioner revealed that the Enugu State Government is finalising plans to launch a state-backed airline, Enugu Air, which is expected to begin operations in May 2025.
According to Dr Ozor, Enugu Air is being developed in collaboration with private aviation company Xejet, which will oversee its initial operations. The airline will commence service with three Embraer aircraft: the 76-seater E-170 and the 100-seater E-190.
Initial flight routes will connect Enugu with major Nigerian cities including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Kano. The state plans to expand the fleet to more than six aircraft before the end of 2025, with regional destinations in West and Central Africa being considered for future expansion.
Dr Ozor highlighted the strategic selection of Embraer jets, citing their durability in hot, dusty conditions and their efficiency in terms of passenger load. All aircraft will be under 10 years old and compliant with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s standards.
He also noted that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has provided Enugu Air with office space and check-in facilities at seven major airports across the country.
The state government views the airline initiative as a key element in its wider strategy to boost investment and facilitate business travel in the region. Enugu is preparing to host the Nigerian Bar Association’s annual conference in August, an event expected to attract over 15,000 visitors.
