The Enugu State Government has signed a $100 million agreement with Austrian firm WANDE NEXUS to modernise its water infrastructure, marking a major step towards providing long-term and fair access to clean water across the state.
The deal was sealed on December 2 at the Government House in Enugu, with Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Thomas Schlesinger, in attendance.
Governor Peter Mbah hailed the agreement as a transformative moment for the state, showcasing his administration’s success in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).
“This $100 million investment addresses critical last-mile connectivity issues in our water system,” Mbah said. “It is a testament to the economic reforms at both the federal and state levels, positioning Enugu as a premier investment destination.”
The governor explained that the agreement goes beyond planning to immediate implementation, with financing already secured.
Governor Mbah’s administration has significantly increased water production, boosting output from two million litres per day to 120 million litres. However, distribution challenges persist, particularly in connecting tertiary pipelines to homes.
“This agreement will solve our downstream water issues, ensuring that every home has access to clean, reliable water,” he said.
Ambassador Schlesinger commended Governor Mbah for his vision and proactive engagement, which included high-level meetings in Vienna.
“Governor Mbah’s commitment to modernising Enugu’s water systems is exemplary,” Schlesinger said. He also praised Dr Ugochukwu Ugbor, Chairman of WANDE NEXUS Group, for his leadership and the firm’s readiness to deliver on the project.
Dr Ugbor highlighted the favourable investment climate fostered by the Mbah administration, which encouraged WANDE NEXUS and its Austrian partners to commit to the initiative.
“This initiative will create 500 direct jobs, enhance human capital in water management, and significantly improve health outcomes and economic opportunities for Enugu residents,” he said.
The project will implement advanced metering infrastructure and sustainable connectivity solutions, using cutting-edge technology to improve efficiency and access.
Governor Mbah’s administration has prioritised infrastructure development to position Enugu as a model of sustainable growth.
This partnership is expected to deliver lasting benefits across health, economic, and social sectors while enhancing Enugu’s profile as a destination for international investment.
