Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has appointed Chidimma Adetshina, a South African-born Nigerian model, as the state’s ambassador.
On Thursday, Mbah welcomed the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria and her father, Okechukwu Onwe, to the government house in Enugu. During their visit, the governor praised Chidimma for her “resilience and determination,” calling her a “true representation of the people of Enugu.”
Mbah highlighted her ability to inspire young people, encouraging them to pursue their goals by sharing her own journey. He also pledged the state government’s support for her participation in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Mexico.
“Your story is inspiring. Despite attempts to discourage you, you’ve shown the grit and resilience that defines the people of Enugu State. You are a true daughter of Enugu,” Mbah said. “With the achievements you’ve made, you can serve as a major influence, particularly for young girls. We’ll explore ways for you to engage with them, share your experience, and inspire them.”
Chidimma expressed her gratitude to the people of Enugu for their warm reception and praised Governor Mbah for his focus on education in the state. She affirmed her commitment to being a role model for young women.
“My story is powerful, not only in Nigeria but globally. Many young people can relate to my journey and learn from it,” she said.
Born in 2001 in Soweto, South Africa, Chidimma’s father is from Enugu, while her mother is reportedly a naturalised South African of Mozambican origin. Earlier this year, she sparked controversy during the Miss South Africa pageant due to her Nigerian nationality, leading to criticism from some South Africans and her eventual withdrawal from the contest.
Her decision to withdraw followed allegations from the South African Department of Home Affairs, suggesting her mother may have committed fraud and identity theft. Chidimma firmly denied the allegations, stating, “I didn’t steal anyone’s identity.”
On August 14, she accepted an invitation to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, where she was later crowned the winner. Chidimma also rejected claims that she won “out of pity,” asserting that she underwent the same rigorous process as the other contestants and worked hard to earn her title.
