Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah announced on Thursday the approval of a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for state employees
The governor shared this news on his X account, stating that the new minimum wage will take effect from October.
“I have just approved a minimum wage of ₦80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024,” the post read. “We appreciate the hard work and sacrifices of the state’s workforce and will continue to prioritise their welfare in line with our campaign promises. Tomorrow is here.”
Mbah’s decision follows a similar announcement made a day earlier by Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, who also set the minimum wage for civil servants in his state at ₦80,000.
Recently, numerous governors authorised new minimum wages for their employees. On October 16, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu increased the minimum salary for public sector workers in Lagos to ₦85,000. Two days later, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara authorised a ₦85,000 minimum pay for civil servants in the state.
In July, President Bola Tinubu signed a minimum wage bill into law, raising the baseline pay for workers from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.
