The Enugu State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to fostering sustainable agriculture through strategic collaborations, as the state moves to unlock its agricultural potential and strengthen value chain development.

This commitment was highlighted by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Mr. Patrick Ubru, during a meeting in Enugu with a delegation from the South Saharan Social Development Organisation (SSDO), a non-governmental organisation led by Executive Director Dr. Stanley Ilechukwu.

Mr. Ubru emphasised that the ministry remains fully committed to partnering with agriculture-oriented organisations to boost food production for both local consumption and export.

He noted that agriculture remains vital to Nigeria’s economy and is central to the livelihoods of many families across Enugu State.

“Agriculture is the backbone of Nigeria’s economy. In Enugu State, many families, both in urban and rural areas, depend on various forms of agricultural activity for their daily livelihoods,” he said.

He praised Governor Dr. Peter Mbah for his ongoing support of the sector, explaining that the administration is actively equipping verified and registered farmers with essential resources, modern techniques, and training to transform agriculture into a viable business enterprise.

In response, Dr. Ilechukwu expressed SSDO’s readiness to work alongside the ministry to deliver lasting agricultural solutions, particularly targeting rural farmers.

He pledged the organisation’s full backing for state-led initiatives that aim to empower farmers, modernise agricultural practices, and improve food availability throughout Enugu and beyond.

“As climate change continues to pose a threat to food production, SSDO remains committed to advancing impactful initiatives alongside the Enugu state government. Together, we can secure a resilient future for agriculture in the region,” he stated.

He further outlined the focus areas of the proposed collaboration, including agroecology, climate resilience, and policy reform—key pillars in the drive to achieve enduring food security and sustainable development.

Dr. Ilechukwu underscored that the partnership would mark a significant milestone in the effort to build a robust agricultural system that delivers tangible benefits to farmers, strengthens rural communities, and enhances overall state prosperity.
