The Enugu State Government has announced plans to launch a comprehensive suite of transportation and mobility initiatives—including a state airline, a fleet of 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, and a smart transport programme—before the administration marks its second anniversary on 29 May 2025.

The development was revealed during the weekend by the Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Obi Ozor, following a State Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Enugu. The update was also shared via the official X account of Governor Peter Mbah’s Senior Special Adviser on Media, Dan Nwomeh.

According to Dr Ozor, the state airline project, Enugu Air, will commence operations with three aircraft—two of which have already arrived.

“We are starting off with the initial three aircraft, and two of the aircraft are already on the ground. The third one will be on the ground by the end of this month,” he said.

“We are hoping to start the commercial operations before the second-year anniversary of this administration.”

On the mass transit front, Dr Ozor confirmed that 50 CNG-powered buses have already been delivered, while another 50 are expected within the next few weeks.

“You have also seen buses for the mass transit programme across the state. Fifty of them are already parked at Okpara Square, and an additional 50 will be joining that fleet shortly,” he said.

He assured that all 100 buses will be operational before the end of May.

Complementing the new bus fleet are five state-of-the-art bus terminals, which the commissioner said will be commissioned before the anniversary date. These include two terminals at Holy Ghost, and one each at Gariki, Abakpa, and Nsukka. These transit points are designed to enhance passenger experience and streamline transport operations across the state.

Looking ahead, Dr Ozor outlined an ambitious long-term vision for the state’s mobility sector. He disclosed that plans are underway to establish a manufacturing plant in Enugu for CNG and electric vehicles. The facility will also serve as a maintenance hub, supporting a sustainable transition to clean energy transportation.

Additionally, the government aims to roll out the Enugu Smart Transport Programme within the next 150 days. The initiative will feature digital ticketing, route optimisation, and the introduction of over 2,000 electric vehicles into the state’s transport system.

The planned upgrades underscore the Mbah administration’s commitment to innovation, environmental sustainability, and modern infrastructure as part of a broader economic transformation agenda for Enugu State.
