Enyimba International FC clinched the title of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Sunday, emerging as champions after a 1-1 draw against defending champions, Rivers United FC, in the Super-Six playoffs. This victory marks their ninth league title.
Ekene Awazie opened the scoring for the two-time African champions in the 39th minute, while Nyima Nwagua equalised for Rivers United three minutes into the second half.
The 1-1 draw secures Enyimba International as the 2023 NPFL champions, earning them a cash prize of One Hundred Million Naira (N100m) and securing the CAF Champions League ticket. Despite having the same number of points (9) as Enyimba, Rivers United, the reigning champions, dropped to third place on the table and will represent Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup next season. Surprisingly, Remo Stars finished second on the table with 9 points, edging out Rivers United due to a better goal difference, and will proudly carry the Nigerian flag in the 2023/24 CAF Champions League.
Bendel Insurance slipped to fifth place on the table but will have an opportunity to secure a continental ticket when they face Rangers International in the final of the 2023 Federation Cup. The winners of the final will earn the second CAF Confederation Cup ticket.
