Nigerian giants Enyimba staged a thrilling comeback to draw 2-2 with defending CAF Confederation Cup champions Zamalek in a Group D clash on Sunday in Uyo.
Zamalek controlled the opening half, with Tunisian forward Seifeddine Jaziri opening the scoring and Omar Faraj doubling the lead by the 40th minute. Enyimba, however, found a lifeline just before halftime when Ifeanyi Ihemekwele lobbed over Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Awad to cut the deficit.
The Nigerian side returned with renewed vigour and equalised in the 57th minute through Chinedu Ufere, whose deflected shot left Awad stranded. Despite creating several chances in the closing stages, Enyimba’s finishing woes prevented them from snatching a late winner.
Enyimba chairman and football legend Nwankwo Kanu was in attendance, witnessing the home side’s spirited performance.
The draw leaves Enyimba with a single point after two matches, following their opening defeat to Al Masry. Zamalek, who won their first match against Mozambique’s Black Bulls, move to four points.
