The much-anticipated Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool, which was supposed to take place on Saturday, December 7, at 12:30 GMT, has been postponed because of Storm Darragh’s harsh weather.
This was made public on the club website on Saturday.
The title is “Everton vs. Liverpool postponed due to inclement weather.”
The Merseyside derby was scheduled to be the first game of game week 14 this weekend, according to PUNCH Online.
Merseyside Police, Liverpool City Council, and representatives from both teams met at Goodison Park this morning to hold an emergency Safety Advisory Group meeting. The group determined that the match was hazardous because of the high wind gusts and the amber severe wind warning that is in effect until 6:00 GMT on Sunday.
The match was cancelled in a unanimous decision to protect the safety of the players, supporters, and crew because the strong winds during the night also seriously disrupted traffic throughout Merseyside.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank supporters for their understanding,” Everton said in response to the postponement.
“The safety of players, staff, and fans is of utmost importance, even though we understand that this will be extremely disappointing for supporters.
“Details regarding a new date for the match will be revealed when the time comes. All tickets bought for the original event will still be good for the new one.
“We understand that this will be extremely disappointing for supporters, but the safety of fans, staff, and players is of paramount importance,” Liverpool said, echoing similar views.
“Travel in and around Merseyside has also been severely disrupted by severe weather and strong winds.”
Gale-force winds caused by Storm Darragh have disrupted transport and created hazardous conditions throughout the region. The decision to postpone the match was reinforced by the significant challenges faced by fans travelling to the game.
Even though this match has been postponed, managers of Fantasy Premier League teams still have until 11:00 GMT on Saturday to select their squads.
Information about a new date for the match will be released shortly. It is recommended that fans save their tickets, as they will still be good for the rescheduled game.
