After several denials of its involvement in Ethiopia’s forces battle against Tigrayan soldiers, Eritrea has finally admitted it provided support for its neighbours in the clashes.
Eritrea has told the UN Security Council that its forces were present in Tigray in a latter addressed to the 15 members of the Security Council.
The nation’s Ministry of Information also published the admission and submitted that it had been present in Ethiopia since the clashes began in November.
Abiy Ahmed Ali had admitted the presence of Eritrean troops last month after the UN and U.S. demanded the withdrawal of Eritrean soldiers.
Eritrea has been accused of human right abuses including rape and torture while they’ve also been accused of killing Tigrayans recklessly.
Eritrean soldiers have also been accused of putting on uniforms of Ethiopian Army personnel with both nations seeking to steer clear of accusations that question their respect for human rights.
Recall that a clash occurred between Ethiopia and the powerful northern region, Tigray, with the Tigray People’s Liberation Force facing the Ethiopian forces in duels that saw at least 1 million people fleeing danger.
Thousands of deaths have been recorded and investigations by UN have shown critical cases of human rights abuse from the national forces and their Eritrean counterparts.
While Eritrea says it’s withdrawing its troops, the UN has said there’s still the presence of their soldiers in Tigray.
