Escaping the Horrors in Ukraine: Nigerian Lady Shares Her Experience (News Central TV)

Some Nigerian students who had escaped war-torn Ukraine to Poland and Hungary were now being held in Poland.

The evacuation of Nigerian students stuck in Ukraine, following the Russian invasion, has sparked reactions across the world.

The Nigerian Government had approved $8.5 million for the immediate evacuation of 5,000 Nigerians stranded as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Meanwhile, each returnee will get $100 from the Federal Government on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

They Federal Government is looking to evacuate around 8,000 Nigerians, many of whom fled Ukraine for Hungary, Poland, Germany, Romania, and Slovakia. The majority are young people who are studying at Ukrainian universities.

On Monday night, Osaruese Okonedo, a Nigerian Student studying in Ukraine, shared her experience with News Central TV.

She noted that ‘life is a battle, and if there were challenges, she would save her siblings first.’ She revealed that the officials at the border refused to stamp her passport after trekking for almost seven hours.

Osaruese stated that she was able to evacuate herself from the war-ravaged country all by herself despite putting calls through to the Nigerian Embassy in Ukraine.

According to Osaruese’s narration, she was able to collect food and toiletries but was unable to find it when the Russian military began to launch airstrikes into the country due to the pandemonium that followed.

She added that upon arrival in Germany after her successful evacuation, she lodged in a hotel where she was paying 64 euros per day.

Osaruese revealed she lives with her cousin and she has not received any sort of help from the Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).
