Eswatini Prime Minister Dies of COVID-19

Prime Minister of Eswatini, Ambrose Dlamini who tested positive for COVID-19 four weeks ago has died from the virus.

Dlamini, 52, who was hospitalised in neighbouring South Africa, gave up the ghost on Sunday evening.

“Their Majesties have commanded that I inform the Nation of the sad and untimely passing away of His Excellency the Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini. His Excellency passed on this afternoon while under medical care in a hospital in South Africa”, Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku revealed in a statement.

Dlamini was taken to South Africa to fast-track his recovery but he hardly recovered.

He became Prime Minister in 2018, after he left his office as Chief Executive Officer of MTN Eswatini. He was also the former Managing Director of Nedbank Limited, Eswatini.

The Southern African country has been plagued with the Coronavirus pandemic, recoding more than 6,000 cases from its population of 1.2m people.

COVID-19 has led to the death of high-profile politicians across the continent with some nations counting their losses.

There are fears that a second wave of the virus will shake the continent more than the first and nations and their nationals have been advised to brace up for the challenges ahead.
