The Ethiopian Football Federation has declared the 2019/20 Premier League “null and void” in the wake of the global coronavirus pandemic. Consequently, there will be no league winners, no teams will be relegated, neither will be there be any representatives in CAF club competitions next season.
The Liberian football federation also announced same decisions today.
Last month, the Confederation of African Football wrote to its member associations setting a May 5 deadline to decide whether they intend to continue with their domestic season or call a premature end to the campaign.
Ethiopia and Liberia join countries like Kenya, Angola and Mauritius who have prematurely ended their leagues. Nairobi-based Gor Mahia were crowned champions of the Kenya Premier League, their fourth championship in a row. Gor Mahia had held a seven-point lead over Kakamega Homeboyz, who had a game in hand, with 11 rounds of matches to play in the 34-game season.
In Angola, there were just five rounds to play in the 30-game season but a meeting of Girabola clubs last week resolved not to continue the campaign with no title awarded and no relegation. The top two, Petro Atletico and Primero de Agosto, will represent the country in the Champions League
Elsewhere, Mauritius ended their soccer season earlier this month without declaring a champion.
Meanwhile the Malian FA has announced its decision to continue the national championship and domestic cup competition when local conditions improve and government clearance is received. On its part, the Ghana Football Association has informed CAF that it will make a decision on the fate of the 2019-20 football season in the next two weeks.
Member associations who did not communicate their decisions on wednesday are believed to have plans to conclude their seasons.
