Following the purported capture, execution, and public exhibition of the remains of seven soldiers and a civilian murdered over the weekend, Ethiopian and Sudanese forces have engaged in combat near the contentious al-Fashaga border region.

On Tuesday, Sudan said that it had reclaimed several of its territory that the Ethiopian army had been occupying.

The breadbasket Gedaref state of Sudan joins the Amhara region of northwest Ethiopia at the al-Fashaga region.

It has been disputed for many years, but during the past year, tensions have risen as frequent clashes between the two nations have been reported.

According to sources, two communities along the disputed border that were being seized by Ethiopians were advanced upon and retaken by Sudanese soldiers.

As the Sudanese attack went on, military aircraft were also visible flying overhead and circling the disputed area.

Numerous Ethiopian military vehicles appeared to have been damaged in images posted on social media, but these images could not immediately be authenticated.

Sudan claims Ethiopian forces captured and executed seven of its soldiers, however Addis Ababa has refuted this claim and has instead charged Sudanese forces with invading its country.

The most recent clashes represent a significant rise in hostilities between the two nations of eastern Africa, who are also at odds over Ethiopia’s building of a massive hydropower dam along the Nile.
