Ethiopia Inaugurates Modern Chancery Building in Delhi

As part of his official visit to India, Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Demeke Mekonnen along with his Indian counterpart External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar have jointly commissioned Ethiopia’s newly constructed chancery and residence in New Delhi.

India has also completed its new chancery building and residences in Addis Ababa. The completion of the expansive chancery buildings in the capitals of both countries reflects the rising bilateral ambitions between Ethiopia and India. Ethiopia and India trace back historical relations to about 2,000 years.

Speaking at the event, Demeke pointed out that the long-standing trade, and investment relationship between the two countries was entrenched with the formal diplomatic relations since 1948.

Ethiopia was one of the first countries from Africa to establish diplomatic contacts with India in 1948 soon after India got its independence in 1947.

The strong solidarity between Ethiopia and India has been demonstrated through seventy-five years of strong and vibrant relations covering cross-cultural, political, developmental and economic collaboration.

Pointing that the Ethiopian Embassy is located in the diplomatic enclave, the statement further said the Foreign Ministers of Ethiopia and India are scheduled to hold official discussions today.

Over 600 Indian companies have invested about $5 Billion in Ethiopia and created employment for over 75,000 Ethiopians.

External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar appreciated the ever-growing multidimensional relations between the countries, citing investment and education as most central.
