After the conclusion of a two-year civil war, Ethiopia‘s parliament took a significant step toward establishing an interim regional administration on Wednesday by removing the leading party in the Tigray area from a list of terrorist organisations.

In May 2021, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), which had sparked a conflict with the federal government in the north in late 2020, was labeled a terrorist organisation.

After tens of thousands of deaths and the eviction of millions of people from their homes, the conflict came to an end with a truce last November.

The delisting was accepted, according to a statement from Ethiopia’s parliament, with the support of most members.

The TPLF’s involvement in the transitional administration, for which the party last week nominated Getachew Reda as its spokesperson, is contingent upon the delisting.
