Redwan Hussein, Ethiopia’s national security adviser, has expressed Ethiopia’s openness to dialogue to ease tensions with Somalia over the contentious port deal with the self-declared republic of Somaliland.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Redwan stated, “As part of our commitment, we shall redouble our effort to ensure a better understanding. Will listen to friends for possible coordination of efforts lowering rhetoric.”
He added, “Will continue striving to steadily conclude with amicable considerations which benefit all.”
On Monday, Mr. Redwan criticised external interference in the dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia, specifically targeting what he referred to as “opportunistic external actors.” These remarks were widely interpreted as directed at Egypt, which had warned against threats to Somalia’s sovereignty.
The dispute arose when Ethiopia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland earlier this month. The agreement grants Ethiopia access to a seaport for both military and commercial purposes in exchange for recognising Somaliland as an independent state.
