Amhara and Tigray area leaders in Ethiopia have stated a shared determination to resolve their problems through dialogue.
The promise was made during negotiations in Bahir Dar, the capital of Amhara, between regional governor for Amhara Yilkal Kefale and interim leader for Tigray, Getachew Reda.
After a violent civil war broke out in northern Ethiopia in November 2020, Getachew led a Tigrayan delegation to the Amhara area for the first time. Last November, a peace agreement brought the battle to an end.
The quickest route between Tigray and Addis Abeba is via Amhara, and the two leaders pledged to work toward reopening that route.
Currently, the longest and most expensive route between Addis Abeba and Tigray by road is through the north-eastern Afar area.
The delicate subject of land conflicts between their two areas, however, was avoided by the two presidents.
