The Russia Embassy in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, have noted that dozens of young Ethiopian men have been coming to express support for Russia.
Following the rumours making the rounds in the country of the embassy’s recruitments, the eager young men teemed in their numbers in the hopes of getting enlisted for war.
An eyewitness in the Kebena area, where the Russian embassy is located, told the Nation that about 200-300 young Ethiopians queued outside the main entrance on Monday.
However, Maria Chernukhina, the Embassy’s Spokesperson, has stated that no recruitment is being carried out in Ethiopia, as they are not a recruitment agency.
“We have a lot of visitors to the embassy in order to express support for Russia,” she told newsmen.
“Some of them are telling us they are willing to help in any way they can. But we are not a recruitment agency,” she said.
Many of the young men gathered at the embassy with a few of their belongings, when interviewed, stated various reasons for their decision to show solidarity with Russia.
Recall that Ethiopia and about 17 other African countries, did not participate in the UN session to vote on a resolution that condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, authorities in Senegal were recently angered by allegations that the Russian embassy in Senegal had issued a notice to recruit citizens to fight in the war.
Kremlin claims to have killed more than 23,000 Ukrainian soldiers, while Ukraine claims to have eliminated 20,000 Russians.
