Following talks between top Brass of the Ethiopian army and TPLF commanders, the Ethiopian ambassador to Kenya has said that the rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) will surrender its heavy weapons on Saturday, December 3, 2022.
In his announcement, Ambassador Bacha Debele stated: “Regarding the surrender of heavy weapons, they (TPLF) were supposed to surrender them on 17 November, but this was not implemented but it has now been decided for them to surrender them on 3 December.”
Bacha added that the field commanders are “meeting every day” to deliberate on the modalities for disarmament and TPLF combatants are being assembled in designated areas.
“Information I obtained today indicates that activities have begun to assemble [TPLF combatants] in designated areas. They are implementing this [disarmament process],” he added.
Ambassador Bacha also said it would be embarrassing to discuss the human cost of the war in public.
In November, the Ethiopian government and the TPLF signed a peace deal in South Africa to peacefully bring the two-year war, to an end.
