The European Commission reiterated its strong commitment to press freedom on Friday, following the removal of two journalists during a press conference held by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The incident involved Max Blumenthal and Sam Husseini, who were escorted out after attempting to protest and question Blinken on his actions regarding Gaza.
Responding to Anadolu Agency’s question, EU Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper emphasised, “We believe all journalists have the right to express themselves.” While she could not provide specific details on the incident, Hipper reaffirmed the EU’s position on the importance of press freedom.
Blumenthal interrupted Blinken’s remarks, accusing him of complicity in the violence in Gaza, particularly targeting journalists.
Husseini, who joined the protest, was forcibly removed by police after expressing similar views, highlighting alleged human rights violations and genocide in Gaza.
The EU’s statement comes at a time when the US, often seen as a global advocate for press freedom, faces criticism over the treatment of journalists during official events.
