European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urged an urgent rearming of Europe during a critical summit in London on Sunday, following discussions over Ukraine’s security.
Von der Leyen stressed the importance of increasing defence spending, noting that a “surge in defence” was essential for preparing for the worst.
She is set to present a detailed plan at an upcoming EU summit, highlighting the need for a collective response to rising threats.
In her address, she called for security guarantees, affirming Europe’s readiness to defend democracy and the rule of law, especially in the face of Russian aggression.

She also addressed US President Donald Trump, emphasising that it is in the West’s shared interest to prevent future wars and uphold the principle that borders cannot be changed by force.
