The European Union has expressed its displeasure with Eritrea after Tigrayan forces alleged the country of launching offensives in Tigray.
Eritrea, a known adversary of Tigray has been in agreement with the Ethiopian government which has been at war with its nothernmost region in the last 20 months.
The EU said Eritrea’s military intervention will only escalate the tension and urged every party to lay down their arms and have peaceful discussions.
“The EU urges once again all parties to forget about any military solution and join efforts for the benefit of their populations,” said Josep Borrell, the EU’s Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Chief.
The TPLF Spokesperson, Getachew Reda said the Eritrean forces were fighting alongside local federal forces in Ethiopia against Tigray.
The UN and the US have also condemned Ethiopia’s role in the war and alleged that the country committed violations against human rights. Ethiopia has since rejected the UN’s report.
The war in Tigray has led to the death of thousands of people and the displacement of millions. Complex, deep and hydra-headed, it is one of Africa’s most complicated security issues at the moment.
