Poll observers from the European Union (EU) highlighted irregularities in Mozambique’s general election results, which the opposition has disputed.
Tear gas was used by riot police in Maputo to disperse a crowd protesting alleged fraud in the presidential and parliamentary election held on October 9. This followed the assassination of two associates of the opposition presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane.
The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) stated that they had observed irregularities during the vote count and unjustified changes to election results at polling station and district levels.
The EU observers called on election authorities in the southern African country to ensure that the ballot count is conducted transparently and credibly and that it reflects the people’s will.
In light of recent social tensions and electoral-related violence, the EU EOM once again expressed condemnation for the killings of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe and urged all parties to exercise utmost restraint.
