Roman Yaremchuk was the hero of the day in Duesseldorf after coming from the bench to score the winning goal as Ukraine produced a spirited comeback to beat Slovakia 2-1 and kickstart their Euro 2024 campaign on Friday.
Slovakia was well aware that victory would take them through to the knockout stage with a game to spare and they took the lead early after Ivan Schranz, netted his second goal of the tournament on 17 minutes.
Ukraine struggled for the rest of the half but emerged from the tunnel a different team and deservedly equalised through Mykola Shaparenko nine minutes after half-time.
The Dynamo Kyiv player then turned provider for Yaremchuk to score the decisive goal as Ukraine joined Slovakia and Romania on three points to throw Group E wide open.
Romania play Belgium, who are bottom without a point, on Saturday in Frankfurt before the final round of matches next Wednesday.
