Marcus Rashford will pay for his abysmal season as the Manchester United forward was left out of Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man England squad for Euro 2024 on Tuesday.
Chelsea captain, Reece James as well as former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson were among the notable absentees from the squad, which must be trimmed to a maximum of 26 before the tournament in Germany begins.
It is the first time the Manchester United forward will miss out on a major international tournament for the first time since the 2014 World Cup.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones have joined the squad in their first call-ups.
Even without the experience of Rashford upfront, England has a wealth of attacking options and puts them in the favourites’ conversation.
Marcus Rashford’s 8 goals in 42 appearances for his club this season wasn’t enough to earn him a place and he tops the list of big names left out of the showpiece.
Henderson’s move to Ajax in January after his stint in Saudi Arabia has not done enough to earn the 33-year-old a place and despite Jadon Sancho late season bloom with Borussia Dortmund, it wasn’t enough to convince Southgate.
Southgate’s former favourites Raheem Sterling and Kalvin Phillips were also left out.
England begin their pursuit of a major tournament for the first time in 58 years against Serbia on June 16 before facing Denmark and Slovenia in Group C.
