Ex-Brighton Boss, De Zerbi to Become Marseille Manager

Former Brighton manager, Roberto De Zerbi has agreed to a deal with French Club, Olympique Marseille to become their new manager. An “agreement in principle” provides that De Zerbi will replace Jean-Louis Gasset, who retired at the end of the French league season.

The Italian who left Brighton after two seasons took the Seagulls to its highest-ever top-flight finish of sixth, then to the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League.

Marseille released a statement late Monday saying that it is “currently working with all parties involved to formalise the arrival of the Italian coach and his staff on the OM bench, and to prepare for his arrival in Marseille in the coming days.”

Since American owner Frank McCourt acquired the club in Marseille in 2016, the former giants have struggled to find stability, facing a series of coaching changes and crises.

Marseille dominated domestic soccer in the late 1980s and early 1990s and remains the only French team to win the Champions League. However, It hasn’t won the French league since 2010.
