Former Ghanaian President, John Mahama has taken an early lead as results of the country’s Presidential election trickle in.
Mahama, of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is leading in the number of votes after the announcement of results from seven of Ghana’s sixteen regions.
According to the electoral commission, it has received results from 14 of the 16 regions in the country.
The commission earlier apologised to Ghanaians and explained why it had to ditch plans of announcing results 24 hours after the election.
It cited unexpected rainfall and resultant inaccessibility to the hinterlands as a reason.

From the seven regions released so far, incumbent Nana Akufo-Addo won in four of the regions while Mahama won in three. However, Mahama recorded a landslide win in the Volta region where he won by more than 500,000 votes, and that has given him an advantage, as results from other regions are expected to be announced in the coming hours.
Akufo-Addo won in the Ahafo, North East, Central, and Bono regions while Mahama won in the Volta, Oti and Upper West regions of the country.
As it stands, Mahama has the total vote of 1,997,450 against Akufo-Addo’s 1,500,310.
Both candidates, fierce political rivals, have approached the election with issues-based discourse on the front burner.
Political analysts have hailed the electoral process as solid, progressive and exemplary for other African countries to adopt.
Mahama was Ghana’s President between 2012 and 2016 and was the first leader of the country to lose a Presidential election while in power.
